Building a greener railway

The Scottish Government puts tackling climate change at the heart of its policy agenda. With plans in place for Scotland to transition to net-zero emissions by 2045, our transport systems have a key role to play in achieving this for the prosperity of our nation, our economy and our people.

Decarbonising our railway by 2035 is a transport measure which is fundamental to achieving this target. This means the withdrawal of diesel traction for ScotRail passenger services by that date. However, this will necessitate substantial changes to the areas around our rail infrastructure, particularly where the route is being electrified.

This policy document sets out how measures including de-vegetation will be implemented while giving due consideration to the natural environment and to engagement with lineside neighbours.
