AWPR/B-T – Changes at Newburgh Junction

Following monitoring of the temporary traffic management measures in place at the Newburgh Junction, the contractor for the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route/Balmedie to Tipperty (AWPR/B-T) project is making changes.

The majority of the changes are expected to be implemented today. The changes include:

• The 40mph speed restriction being extended to include the A90/A975 junction.
• A new diversion will be in place for northbound traffic. Drivers should follow the new diversion north on the A975 from Newburgh and then join the Auchmacoy Road, which leads to the A90 near the Ellon Park & Ride
• A separate diversion for HGVs. Auchmacoy Road is unsuitable and therefore HGV drivers are advised to follow the A975 to Cruden Bay where they can re-join the A90.

Additional signage is currently being put in place to inform drivers of the new diversions and to remind them that there is no through access on the B9000 to Pitmedden or Newburgh due to the closures on the A90.

A Transport Scotland spokesperson said:

“The safety of the local community and road users is of the utmost importance to Transport Scotland. Following the opening of a new road layout between Bridgend and Foveran, and the subsequent closure of the B9000, more traffic is using the A975 to access the A90 during busy times. The local roads authority agreed this diversion with the contractor on condition that it is monitored.

“As such, the contractor is aware of the increased congestion in this area and is therefore implementing a series of necessary changes to its traffic management measures. Additional diversions are in place for road users who wish to travel north on the A90. HGV drivers should note that the diversion they should take is different because Auchmacoy Road is unsuitable for HGVs.

“This junction will continue to be monitored during busy periods and other additional options may be implemented over the coming days and weeks to enhance the safety of the local community, road users and workers, if required.

“We strongly encourage road users to observe all signage and to use more caution while getting used to the new traffic management measures in place. We would also like to thank road users for their continued patience while works are ongoing.”
