AWPR - weekend closure for A956 Wellington Road

A section of the A956 Wellington Road at Charleston is expected to close this weekend from 8pm on Friday 6 April to 6am on Monday 9 April, as part of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route/Balmedie to Tipperty (AWPR/B-T) project.

This closure, which will enable the contractor to undertake surfacing and verge works, requires a number of diversions to enable road users to complete their journeys and significant delays in this area are expected. Diversions will be sign-posted.

The works planned for the A956 Wellington Road are weather dependent and are therefore subject to change at short notice.

A90 northbound diverge to A956 Wellington Road

Northbound traffic wishing to access the A956 Wellington Road should continue on the A90 to Bridge of Dee where they will be directed to the A956 Wellington Road via Great Southern Road and West Tullos Road.

A90 southbound merge from A956 Wellington Road

Road users travelling westbound on the A956 Wellington Road who wish to travel on the A90 northbound or southbound will be diverted from the A956 Wellington Road onto the Old Stonehaven Road to Findon Junction, where they will be able to join the A90 and continue northbound or southbound as required.

A956 Wellington Road and Old Stonehaven Road

The section of Wellington Road between the A956 and C8K Cove Road will only be available in the southbound direction, with no access along this section for northbound traffic. Access from this area to the A90 northbound and southbound will be available via Wellington Road south of the C8K Cove Road, Old Stonehaven Road and Findon Junction. Access from this area to the A956 will be via the same route and the diversion for the A956 described above.

Escorted access will be available to Redmoss Road residents and local businesses.

Bus services outbound from Aberdeen are not affected, however city-bound buses which would normally travel between Gateway Roundabout and Souter Head Road will be diverted during this closure. Further information regarding the services affected will be available on the Stagecoach website.

A Transport Scotland spokesperson said:

“The contractor has been working closely with Police Scotland and the local authorities to time these works to take place during periods when traffic is normally quieter. However, the closure of the A956 Wellington Road is significant and is expected to cause delays in the area.

“We would like to advise road users who would normally use this route to consider whether their journey is necessary. If it is necessary, they should plan their journey in advance so that they can reach their destination safely and on time.

“We would like to thank road users and the local community for their on-going support and patience during these construction works.”
