Walking, wheeling and cycling
Active travel is walking, wheeling or cycling for a purposeful journey. Wheeling includes using a wheelchair or mobility aid as an alternative to walking.
We're committed to our active travel vision of enabling walking, wheeling and cycling to be the most popular mode of travel for short, everyday journeys. We want to make it easier and safer for people of all ages and abilities to choose healthier and happier active travel across Scotland's towns and cities; where people can enjoy high quality public space and where businesses can thrive.
Active travel is fundamental to all of the interconnected priorities of our National Transport Strategy and works alongside our commitment to reduce car travel by 20% by 2030, supporting our transition to a net zero transport system.
